Award Criteria for Board Member of the Year
Purpose:
The Board Member of the Year Award is the highest honor bestowed upon members of the Board of Directors by the Board of Directors. This award is presented to board members who have demonstrated outstanding service to the University and the Alumni Association by giving their time, talents, and resources as board members to further the goals and objectives of the Alumni Association.
Criteria:To be considered for the Board Member of the Year Award, a board member must meet the following criteria:
- A nomination is required and can only be made by members in good standing on the Virginia State University Alumni Association Board of Directors. All nominations are confidential and must be forwarded to the Alumni Association’s Awards Committee for consideration.
- The nominee must be a member in good standing and affiliated with an active chapter in good standing.
- The nominee must have demonstrated a continuing interest in and support of the Virginia State University Alumni Association by contributing time, talent, or resources to the purpose and objectives of the Alumni Association.
- The nominee must have a record of attendance (or provided proxy) at all scheduled National Board of Directors meetings.
- The nominee must have a record of attending various alumni-related activities, such as Homecoming, VSU Founder's Day, Alumni Weekend, and National Conventions when held.
- The nominee must have a record of serving or personally contributing to committees established by the Board of Directors.
- Only nomination forms distributed or posted online by the Association are acceptable for submission. In addition to the nomination form, other documentation supporting the nomination should also be submitted. A photograph (preferably head and shoulders) at 300 dpi or higher must accompany the application.
Calendar:
Nomination forms and any supporting materials should be received by the Alumni Association Awards Committee no later than the third week in March of the year the person is nominated. Nomination forms for 2026 will be available in January.
Selection Methodology:
The Alumni Association Awards Committee will review the nominations and determine the recipient. The decision of the awards committee is final. The award recipient will be officially announced during the Alumni Association’s annual meeting during the University’s Alumni Weekend & Commencement celebration.
The Mighty Trojans start on the road against Barton College on a Thursday night, August 28, at 7 pm. The following week, the team will travel to rival Norfolk State, under the leadership of new coach Michael Vick, on September 6. After the bye week, they will play two away conference games, one against Winston-Salem State and one against Fayetteville State.
On October 4, Johnson C. Smith will travel to Rogers Stadium for the first home game, Military & First Responders Appreciation Day, and Family & Friends Weekend. After a trip to Bowie State, the Trojans play three straight at home against Elizabeth City State (Oct. 18), Bluefield State (Oct. 25), and Lincoln (Nov. 1) before finishing the season against Virginia Union on November 8. Elizabeth City State will be Faculty and Staff Appreciation, Bluefield State will be Homecoming, and Lincoln will be Senior Day. All home games will start at 2 pm unless televised by HBCU Go, which will start at 1 pm.
