Congratulations to VSUAA's New Mr. & Ms. Alumni

VSU Mr. and Ms. 2025 2027

Congratulations to VSU alums Maurice Jones, Class of '12, and Marlo Smith, Class of '13, who was recently crowned Mr. & Ms. Alumni 2025-2027 by the VSU Alumni Association.

The Mr. and Ms. VSU Alumni Scholarship Contest is a fundraising initiative sponsored by the VSU Alumni Association. This year, eight dedicated alumni contestants served as fundraising ambassadors for several weeks to support VSU through the Alumni Association. The contestant who raised the most would be awarded the Mr. or Ms. Alumni title.

Maurice Jones raised the most among the four Mr. Alumni contestants, collecting $7,360, while Marlo Smith raised $12,153.80 among the four Ms. Alumni contestants.   The eight contestants raised an impressive $45,996.20 in support of tuition assistance for VSU students.  We look forward to the work and contributions our incoming Mr. & Ms. Alumni will make on behalf of VSUAA.

VSU Mr. and Ms. 2025 20272

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to LaTroy Brinkley and Shardaé Holmes, our outgoing first-ever Mr. and Ms. VSU Alumni 2023, for their service and dedication over the past two year

Azurest South receives National Historic Landmark Designation

Great news!  Azurest South has received a National Historic Landmark designation from the Department of the Interior It was one of 19 recently announced newly National Historic Landmarks.  Located on VSU's campus between the L. Douglas Wilder Cooperative Extension Building and the J.B. Bolling "ROTC" Building, Azurest South is the official Alumni House for the Virginia State University Alumni Association. Completed in 1939 by VSU alumna Amaza Lee Meredith (1895-1984), one of the nation's first documented African American female architects, Azurest South is a significant landmark of African American material culture and design. It showcases Ms. Meredith's courage in presenting non-traditional ideas in the public eye at the state's first land-grant college for African Americans. In 1993, Azurest South was listed in the Virginia Landmarks Register, and in 1994, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, in 2001, it was documented during Women's Month by the National Register of Historic Places.  Azurest South is a gem and treasure for the Alumni Association and the University.

Become A VSU Class Coordinator

The VSU Class Coordinator Program comprises a loyal group of alumni representing their individual class years. Class Coordinators are considered University ambassadors who help build a strong connection between classmates and the University.
Class Coordinators are some of the most valuable volunteers for the University. Job requirements are simple: a minimal time commitment and the interest to keep in touch with VSU classmates and friends. Being a class coordinator is a great way to remain involved after graduation, and you can be as active as your schedule allows.
Class Coordinators work with the VSU Alumni Office to:
  • Communicate regularly with classmates via letters, calls, emails, or social networking Websites.
  • Keep classmates up-to-date on VSU events and news.
  • Encourage and increase participation in alumni activities such as regional events and reunions.
  • Brainstorm additional ways to keep your class connected.
  • Serve as a reunion planning committee member in your special reunion years.
  • Promote class giving and participation
  • Provide the University of Institutional Advancement with updated contact information for classmates
If you want to become a class coordinator, please get in touch with the VSU Alumni Relations Office at (804) 524- 5045 or email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
(If you don't see your class year represented, please consider becoming a coordinator)
