History of the Logo

life-member

In its early years, Virginia State University's mascot was known by several names, including the “Bearcats” and the “Hilltoppers.” However, in 1936, the university officially adopted the Trojan as its mascot.

Although there is no specific date or designer associated with its creation, the Virginia State University Alumni Association introduced this logo in the late 1960s or early 1970s to visually represent the Association's distinct identity and history. This logo features a Trojan Warrior in a chariot, holding a staff, which symbolizes the arrival of the fighting men and women of Troy.

The logo reflects the Alumni Association's effort to honor both the "Trojan" figure from Greek tradition and the pride of being loyal sons and daughters of Africa. In November 1998, the Association's Board of Directors modified the logo to include a seal surrounding the Trojan, emphasizing the full name of the Alumni Association and the date of its incorporation. In 2007, the Board officially adopted this logo for official use by all active chapters within the Association.
